SELF-BRANDING IS THE MOTHER OF ALL CHALLENGES.
BUUUTTTTT when you…
Can’t explain what you do,
Are a multi-hyphenate with a complex identity, and
Don’t fit any branding molds or archetypes,
YOU FIND A DAMN WAY!
As painful as it was, spending YEARS exploring and teasing out my own brand visuals taught me how to create
MAGNETIC, ONE-OF-A-KIND DESIGNS that make people SLAM ON THE BREAKS, LISTEN, and BUY.
I DIDN’T START WITH A MOOD BOARD OR A LOGO. I STARTED WITH RESEARCH.
Actually, that’s a lie. I TRIED the traditional brand design approach for YEARS. But my designs kept falling flat. They represented PART of ME, but not ALL OF ME, because I couldn’t see myself or my work clearly.
The proof was in the pudding - my visuals didn’t attract the RIGHT kind of clients. And they forced me to mask.
So, in 2020, I went back to the drawing board. To research. I did in-depth interviews with the clients, collaborators, and friends who GOT ME and who I ADORED.
In other words, I talked to MY PEOPLE about what THEY SAW and FELT. I asked them directly, and indirectly, “WHAT DREW YOU TO ME? AND WHY ME?”
Their answer?
my rebelliousness.
My boldness. My UNAPOLOGETICALLY AUTHENTIC way of existing.
So, I ROOTED MYSELF IN THAT KNOWLEDGE.
I STOPPED trying to design logos and mood boards that looked like what was already out there. I deleted thousands of Pinterest Pins.
I bounced back and forth between intuitively creating and thoughtfully dissecting. I pivoted and changed my mind. I LET MYSELF PLAY.
And it EVOLVED INTO THIS.
Patterns made from Rorschach ink blots are a nod to my psychology lineage, queer lens, and the interpretative nature of my work.
Layers of flora and fauna in surreal colors and woven together with torn book pages, splattered paint and Divergent, REAL humans to actively protest Convergent thinking and Oppressive Systems.
